IBM in Talks to Buy Sun?

via WallStreetJournal
o rly?
SUN (JAVA): 3,723,526,925 US$ current stock value. IBM wants to pay up to US$ 6.5 billion:

If the deal does go through, which could happen as early as this week, IBM is likely to pay at least $6.5 billion in cash to acquire Sun, the people said. That would translate into a premium of more than 100% over Sun’s closing price Tuesday.

  1. I don’t know if this case is comparable to the Microsoft/Yahoo case, but I hope Sun makes the right decision. I mean common, they pay almost the double of the actual value of Sun and I’ve read that Sun didn’t get in the right direction with their open source things!

  2. I really don’t know if it is good to merge those two. They always had some “friendly competition” or “friendly fire”.
As of the Open Source Part: I actually like what they did with all their software and the idea to open source everything (Java, OpenSolaris …). Sun really wants to make money with the service around Open Source Software. I’ve seen a presentation last year that summed that up, based on how MySQL wants to do it / did it.

  3. you’re right. it would be better to keep both apart, but I also think that IBM would go in the right direction with Sun.

since our economy is screwed up and Sun’s volume of sale from their services regarding its OSS didn’t answer their expectations, I think they’ll spend some good time in evaluating the offer.
