Yes, I admit it. I love chaos. At least that is what surrounds me. The icons on my Desktop seem to augment themselves. And I will not even start talking about my bookmarking technique (there isn’t any).


Luckily, I got help. And that help is a newly launched service out of Zurich, Switzerland. Nektoon, a one year old company has launched their first product memonic.

It is a simple but very useful little web service that allows you to capture (= copy) and organize snippets of information, images, maps, texts or websites and organize them. The user interface is similar to Google’s Gmail and users should understand it very quickly.

Above you see my little collection of things. You can group your items in different sets (Apple, CenterNetworks, Inbox) and re-order them. The interface also displays which of my items are public accessible (green icon on the right) and which are not (red icon).
The capturing of new items is very easy. You can either add them by hand with a rich text editor, mail the new snippets or use the memonic bookmarklet. This allows you to browse the web and highlight anything you like. After clicking on the bookmarklet, memonic captures the information and stores it in your collection. As easy as pie The bookmarklet even works if you are in private sections that are not accessible by others, like the Facebook stream or a private forum.

As far as I know, the business model behind the service is similar to Evernote. User are getting a freemium version with reduced space for items. If they want more space or other functionality they have to pay a low monthly fee.
Behind this magic lies the cloud computing technology of Amazon’s S3. I think it is safe to say that the service can handle a few users. So please, go ahead and register an account (you don’t have to, but it is more convenient). It is free and it helps you organize your chaos

We all use SMS/short messages regularly. It must be the most used option of a mobile phone today. And this even though it is so expensive.
I use my mobile phone also as a notebook for my ideas. But I have to search my to-do or notes list every time I want to write something down.

What I wonder is, why is there no (free!) option to send an SMS/text messages to my inbox directly? I am in the SMS/texting application all the time. Why can’t I create a regular SMS/short message and set the recipient to 0 or 1270001 and the message is directly moved in my inbox? That SMS/short message does not leave my phone, so it would be free of charge.

And then there are websites, companies or people I am in regular contact but haven’t actually blogged or recommended on my blog. This post is here to present a great website and service I know for quite a while but that hasn’t got the attention it should in Europe and in Switzerland.

What is CloudContacts?

Basically CloudContacts is a service that scans your business cards, stores them in the cloud and lets you access the data any time with any device. It even connects your contacts to Facebook or LinkedIn profiles and much more. And also it offers a huge variety to export your paper business cards to electronic address books like Gmail, Apple Address Book, Highrise and many, many more.

How does it work?

It is pretty easy actually. All you do is collect your business cards you have sorted or lying around and send them in. Or you can take a photo of your cards and send an email. After sending them CloudContacts will scan and import them to an online address book. From here on you have access to all your contacts 24/7 with your computer, iPhone, Blackberry or PSP (any device with Internet access).

What does it cost?

CloudContacts offers different amounts of volumes. You can send in 100 cards for $29.95 (CHF33 / €22), 300 cards for $79.95 (CHF86 / €57) or 500 cards for $124.95 (CHF134 / €89). For 500 cards that is less than $0.25 each!

I was browsing my old photo library and came across some pictures from the old Google Zurich office from the year 2005. And on one of the photos was the following text:
“The translation of Google Main Search Site into Rhaeto-Romance is complete!”

And out of curiosity I’ve checked the current status. And I was a little bit surprised. Not only are there now much more sites to translate, but the Google Main Search Site is only 40% complete!

Maybe Google could organize another “Translate Google” session? Their new offices are much more fun and maybe they offer more than just cake and coke like the first time
