“The Dirty Little Secrets of Search” – Additional Information

By now you have possible heard and read about the New York Times story by David Segal, which talks about how JC Penney cheated Google’s ranking system to become the number one spot for several keywords and phrases.

David Segal contacted me in mid of January about a “dresses” link to the JC Penney website on this blog. At first I was highly skeptical if this is some sort of joke. A little research later and I was ready to talk to David. Over a day or two I explained to him, how that “dresses” link appeared on my website, who put it there, for how long it was there and why somebody would put links like them.

I have a rule: If you get caught, tell everything.. And I am somebody who likes to share my learnings and knowledge. So why not share what I know with David then and with his readers now?

The Who

I use a system called TNX.net. They are like a marketplace for buying backlinks and selling adspace. As a publisher (website owner) I include a little PHP script to my website or WordPress installation. This scripts then connects to the TNX servers and requests links to be included to the current website. Those links are then included as HTML in my blog. What this means, is that it is without knowledge of the PHP code not possible to determine, if the links were added manually or with any kind of system. This makes the links viewable for the Google Indexing Bots. But for this to work, those links are expected to not have the rel=”nofollow” tag defined. The idea of the nofollow-tag is, that if a website owner/editor/writer links to another website, the nofollow-tag tells the indexing bots to ignore and not follow those links. If used, the whole TNX and paid backlinks eco-system would not really work.

The Why

The TNX system trades points for each link added to the publishers website. Some links on cocaman.ch generate 9 points/month, others up to 810 points (see “Google Testing Platypus“, my most successful entry).
This blog currently hosts 307 links. So over 100 links less then in mid January.

These points can be exchanged in two ways:

You can either request a payout. Every TNX point is worth $0.95. The money is transferred to your PayPal account.
You can exchange your points for own backlinks.

I only did the second option. I am an experimenter. In the past couple of years I played with different things. And for such things to be successful, you need traffic and users. Because most of website users come from search engines, you need to rank very high for a given keyword. So I used the TNX system myself to create backlinks to my site. I exclusively used it for my cooking websites. TNX offers you a small convenient wizard, which sets up your backlink texts including anchor text, the amount of backlinks you want and how many TNX points you want to spend per month.

From here on the system is automatic. It now distributes your backlinks on the sites, which fit your selection (eg. category, Google PageRank, …). After a couple of days you can log in to TNX and check out the results.

A total of 9 backlinks was placed to my site. Not so much. But at its highest, I had a couple of hundred backlinks. And this worked very, very good. In a highly competitive query with over 2 million results, I have managed to grab the positions around #6 on Google and position #2 on Bing. And this over a long period of time.

You see, the “playing Google” system is pretty effective. For me personally this is of course good and bad. Good because I could make a few dollars a month while being a full-time student. On the other hand, as a Google user (and fan) this is worrying me. Very often it happened that I did not get the results I was actually looking for. And I really hope Google can fix the whole “black hat SEO game”. Including those eHow, HuffPo, Demand Media guys, who do this kind of search engine optimization on a much, much larger scale.

As promised, I will remove all those links from my websites and blogs. I knew it was wrong. I knew I can get caught. But as so often, you tell yourself “nobody will notice” and “oh that ain’t so bad, others do the same”. But I got caught and burned. Of course Matt Cutts is right, I violated Google’s guidelines. Of course they can and possible will drop me from their index. But differently than others, this is not my business, it is only a hobby and a learning experience for me. I am just a small fish.

JC Penney got burned to. And their agency SearchDex got burned. Have you checked out their website? Last news was from 2007, were they talk about signing up JC Penney for four years. Funny, the contract is up next month. Hey, I am just saying .

Final words. Congratulations to David Segal of the New York Times on this great article. I have never expected it to be such a long article, with so many interview partners and technical details. And it is good to see that Google tries to fight shady black hat SEO. It is of course pretty hard, but I believe in the smart people at Google to solve or dramatically reduce the problem.

I just wanted to check out how I can cancel a subscription on PayPal. The search didn’t display any results, so I clicked on the “Help” link. And this is all the help I get from PayPal …

Log in to PayPal.

Click Profile at the top of the page.

Click Language Preferences under the Account Information column.

Select a language from the drop-down list and click Save.

Go back to the Help Center by clicking the Help link at the top of the page.

To change your language preference back to English, repeat the steps above and select U.S. English.

Google Docs: I am now a video player

Google is about to roll out a new feature to their Google Docs product line: Video Upload and Video Player

The new feature promises easy access to all your uploaded videos from everywhere.

Files that you can play

Uploaded video files can be up to 1 GB. These are the most common video formats that you can upload and play:

WebM files (Vp8 video codec and Vorbis Audio codec)

.MPEG4, 3GPP and MOV files – (h264 and mpeg4 video codecs and AAC audio codec)

.AVI (many cameras use this format – typically the video codec is MJPEG and audio is PCM)

.MPEGPS (MPEG2 video codec and MP2 audio)

.WMV

.FLV (Adobe – FLV1 video codec, MP3 audio)

Uploading works the same way as uploading any document. After you have uploaded your video, it gets converted in the background. It is very well possible that Google uses their excellent YouTube background system for converting the videos.

After converting you can watch your video on your computer or mobile device.

You can have different revisions of your movie or directly download it in its default format again.

Question is, is it really needed to have yet another video uploading site? Of course, the audience for Google Docs is a different one than YouTube.

Red Bull Cola, Natürliches Süss-Getränk

Red Bull kennt jeder. Der Energydrink mit Taurin. Seit Jahren hilft es, langweilige Vorlesungen oder Nachtarbeit zu überstehen. Doch jetzt gibt es etwas neues von Red Bull:
Red Bull Cola, ein natürliches Cola, ohne künstliche Farbstoffe, Aromen oder Konservierungsstoffe.

Probiert habe ich das Getränk an einem normalen Tag an der Hochschule. Lustigerweise wollten sofort alle einen Schluck davon probieren. Vielleicht deswegen, weil neben Kaffee auch der Red Bull Energydrink zum Lieblingsgetränk von Studenten gehört. Also wurde die erste 355ml Dose rumgereicht. Bereits am ersten Gesichtsausdruck war klar, wer das Getränk mag und wer nicht.
Einige waren auch gespannt wie es schmeckt, nachdem sie über das Wochenende die Werbung im Fernsehen gesehen haben. Für alle, die die Werbung noch nicht gesehen, gibt es ja zum Glück Youtube

Im Vergleich zur wohl bereits bekannten Red Bull Dose, ist die neue Cola Dosa ein wenig grösser und hat mit 355ml gegenüber 250ml auch viel mehr Inhalt.

Gekauft werden können die Red Bull Cola Dosen im Handel, entweder einzeln oder als vierer Pack. Auf deren Rückseite sind dann sämtliche Inhaltsstoffe beschrieben.

Geschmackstest

Was bereits schnell auffällt, ist der Unterschied zu anderen Cola Sorten wie Coca Cola oder Pepsi. Anders als andere Colas schmeckt die Red Bull simply cola nicht säuerlich. Man hat nicht das Gefühl, die Zähne würden sich bald auflösen vor lauter Säure. Was den Geschmack jedoch leicht trübt, ist der doch etwas starke Zuckergeschmack.
Zusätzlich ist Red Bull Cola frei von:

Phosphorsäure
Konservierungsstoffen
künstlichen Aromen
künstlichen Farbstoffen

Was beim trinken im Glas sofort auffällt, ist, dass die Red Bull Cola stark schäumt. Viel stärker als Konkurrenzprodukte. Man muss beim einschenken also aufpassen, sonst gibt es eine ziemliche Sauerei . Einmal im Glas, sieht man den unterschiedlichen Cola-Sorten nicht an, welche nun die Red Bull Cola ist. Erst bei einem Geschmackstest erkennt man den Unterschied.

Zutaten

Wasser, Zucker, Kohlensäure, Karamellzuckersirup, natürliche Aromen aus Pflanzenextrakten (0.37%) : Galgant, Vanilleschoten, Senfsamen, Koffein aus Kaffeebohnen (0.013%), Limette, Kolanuss, Kakao, Süssholz, Zimt, Zitrone, Ingwer, Cocablatt, Orange, Ackerminze, Pinie, Kardamom, Muskatblüte, Nelke, Zitronensaftkonzentrat.

Fazit

Eine Dose kostet im Handel rund 1.25 CHF und enthält 355ml natürliches Cola. Das entspricht ungefähr dem Preis der Konkurrenzprodukte. Etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig ist für mich die Form einer Dose. Sie hat durchaus ihre Vorteile (kühlt leicht, sparrt Platz in der Tasche) jedoch trinke ich meine Cola lieber aus dem Glas.
Beim Geschmack überzeugt mich die fehlende Säure. Man denkt nicht sofort an Säuerungsmittel, wenn man einen Schluck trinkt.
Im ganzen ein gelungenes Produkt von Red Bull, das sicher seine Zielgruppe finden wird.

Wasted Hours with Lost (Mathematically)

The highly popular and irritating ABC hit TV series “LOST” will come to an end after the sixth season (currently airing on US television).
Now we just calculated how many hours you have wasted, if the series’ end sucks. And there is a little chance that it will.

So 6 seasons with 22 episodes each: 132 episodes total. Each episode runs 45 minutes, with the interruptions they run 1h. Just watching the episode you have wasted 132 hours. But if you have ever seen Lost, you know that you need at least double as much time to talk and reflect about an episode. Sums up to 264 hours. 264 hours wasted watching and thinking about a fictional story. Now let’s put that in contrast to a normal life.
80 years equals to 700’800 hours. Half of that time we are asleep: 350’400 hours awake.

Out of our awake time, we spend 0.07% watching Lost.
Even if the end of Lost sucks, our loss is little.

ExtraFilm.ch – Fotoleinwand online drucken

Seit Anfang April bietet nun auch ExtraFilm.ch, ein alter Hase im Online-Fotoverarbeitungsdienst, eine Fotoleinwand an. Natürlich hatte ich die Gelegenheit, dieses neue Angebot dank Trigami zu testen.
Doch schon am Anfang stellte sich mir die Frage: Was für ein Foto soll ich den drucken lassen? Um mir die Entscheidung einfacher zu machen, habe ich den Gutschein einfach meiner Freundin gegeben und sie dabei beobachtet, wie sie mit dem Online Fotoservice von ExtraFilm zurecht kommt. Und eines kann ich euch sagen, die Fotoleinwand ist pünktlich und in ausgezeichneter Qualität angekommen. Und das Foto gefällt mir natürlich auch .

Zuerst musste also das Foto von der Computerfestplatte zu ExtraFilm hochgeladen werden. Das geht ganz einfach, in dem man einfach ein neues Album erstellt und das Foto dort speichert. Danach kann man ganz bequem durch das vielfältige Angebot von ExtraFilm surfen. Am besten natürlich direkt zu den Fotoleinwänden. Danach wählt man das gewünschte Format aus und wählt im nächsten Schritt das bereits hochgeladene Foto aus. Der Trick dabei ist nun, das Foto auf die Leinwand zu ziehen. Vielleicht nicht die intuitivste Bedienung, aber man kann damit umgeben. Nun kann man die Grösse des Fotos noch anpassen oder einfache Bildbearbeitungen ‐ wie drehen, rote Augen oder Farben korrigieren ‐ erledigen. Wichtig ist noch zu sagen, dass der leicht hellere Teil des Fotos nicht sichtbar sein wird auf der Leinwand. Dieser Teil wird um den Rahmen gebogen und ist nicht frontal sichtbar. Wenn euch das stört, müsst ihr einfach selbst einen Rahmen um euer Foto machen. Achtet unbedingt auch auf die Auflösung des Fotos. Eine 80 cm Leinwand braucht ein gutes Foto, damit man auch aus der Nähe keine Artefakte erkennt. Am einfachsten ist es, einfach die grösste Auflösung zu verwenden wenn ihr ein Foto macht und es später als Leinwand drucken möchtet.

Hat man sich das Foto zurecht gemacht, kann man die Leinwand in den Warenkorb legen, bezahlen und schon wenige Tage später habt ihr eure tolle Fotoleinwand zuhause.

Sometimes crowdsourcing works. Sometimes it does not. This is an example that shows how wrong it can go.

Brizzly Guide is a sideproduct from the great Twitter client “Brizzly”. In that guide every user can add a description about a trending Twitter topic. And as of now, easter is a trending topic. The given explanation is “Zombie Jesus Day”. You know, because Jesus reincarnated on that day (supposedly).

Update: well that was quick. A few seconds after publishing this post, the Brizzly CEO @shellen fixed the entry.

SofTax 2009 PDF Speichern/Kopieren

Es ist wieder einmal die Jahreszeit, wo tausende von Schweizer und Schweizerinnen ihre Steuererklärung ausfüllen und abgeben müssen. Wer die Graubünder Software “SofTax” verwendet, hat natürlich den digitalen Vorteil gegenüber der Papierversion. Jedoch lässt sich das generierte PDF nicht kopieren oder speichern. Eigentlich. Dank eines einfachen Tricks für Mac OS X lässt es sich doch speichern und kopieren. Dazu muss man einfach das geöffnete PDF in den Papierkorb verschieben. Diese Option findet man in “Preview” (“Vorschau” auf deutsch”) unter “Bearbeiten”, “Geöffnetes PDF in den Papierkorb verschieben”.

Hat man das Dokument in den Papierkorb verschoben, kann man es ganz einfach auf den Desktop verschieben und hat vollen Zugriff auf das Dokument. Also kopieren oder per E-Mail versenden.

Vielleicht klappt der Trick auch für andere Steuersoftware. Verifizieren kann ich das selbst nicht . Auch nicht, ob es einen ähnlichen Tipp für Windows Systeme gibt.

Apple iPad on 24?

When the iPad was publicly announced in January 2010, a producer of Fox’ tv action series “24″ reported on Twitter that they are working hard to get the iPad on the show. And now that the US launch of the iPad is less then a week away, I start to wonder, I we will see the device in action this Monday, as the fourteenth episode of season 8 is airing. Wouldn’t that be some great treat for the Apple and 24 fanboys? Watching Jack defuse a bomb with his iPad and Chloe hacking some firewall with the tablet?

Let us do some math. The last episode (ever) of 24 will be aired on May 24h. Production date of that episode will be around April 9th, several days after the availability of the iPad. That’s 45 days in between. Now lets calculate from the iPad event in January to next Monday’s episode: 62 days. Minus a few days/weeks of negotiation with Apple, it could very well be, that Apple’s iPad will have an appearance on 24 this coming Monday.

This little experiment is in no way scientific. I just found it funny to see how machines translate my blog header. Some did pretty well (Bing especially, WorldLingo) while other did complete nonsene (like Reverso2.com or Google with a wrong article). Yahoo and WorldLingo need to fix their “e after ä” error.
I think I will give Bing a few more tries in the future. Their translation seems very solid to me.
