I finally installed IpCop 1.4.x on my firewall.
The installation was easy as ever and the web-gui looks quite good to me (even with dhtml menues ;)). A nice feature of the new 1.4.x branch is the built-in packet shaping (or QoS – Quality of Service). You can set for each port and protocol (TCP/UDP) a priority – High, Medium and Low. And it seems to work. My downloads are getting slower if somebody is surfing. The only point I would like to point out, is the missing possibility to use a layer7 filter. With that, the setup would even be more easier. I know this from the PacketTeer products.
I also installed CopFilter. This free addon for IpCop adds an anti-spam, anti-virus extension. You can easily set up spamassasin, clamav and many other tools to manage e-mails and malicious websites.
For the next few days, if time allows, I will play around a little bit and see what other addons are out there. Specially the new VPN interface seems interessting.
